Rheumatologists are doctors who specialize in treating inflammatory (rheumatic) diseases. Rheumatologists diagnose and treat many conditions including:

  • Inflammatory diseases that affect joints, muscles, and bones
  • Connective tissue disorders that can affect ligaments, tendons, skin, and other organs
  • Autoimmune diseases that can affect many parts of the body

Examples of some of the diagnosis treated include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, vasculitis, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren’s disease and others.

In order to become a rheumatologist, a physician must first complete a training program in internal medicine. This is followed by specialty training, called a fellowship, in rheumatology. Our rheumatologists work with many inflammatory conditions and work closely with Memorial’s Infusion services/care , Cornerstone pharmacy, Valley Imaging, as well as other community partners.
